Before stepping in front of the camera, it’s essential to know your niche. This helps you target the right wardrobe to build a portfolio that aligns with your career goals. It's also helpful in selecting agents to submit to. Often an agent will specialize in certain types so you want to hone in on your type and know how you might be best marketed. It is a business so this is part of being a professional and you taking charge of your career. What is your niche or what type of acting or modeling are you best suited for?

  • Commercial Modeling: Lifestyle ads for products and brands.

Step 4: Get Training and Experience

Ongoing training is extremely valuable for actors, but models can also learn by practicing poses, working with photographers TFP (trade for print) and even taking a commercial class. This gives you practice which builds confidence. 

For Aspiring Actors

  • Join community theater for stage experience.
  • Study different techniques including on camera, audition technique, cold reading or Improv.

In today’s digital world, a strong online presence is essential. Social media can be your best friend if used strategically and many agents will want you to have an account. In addition to social media, there are several casting sites that you should post your profiles on.

  • Casting Sites: Create your profiles with your resume, skills and headshots and portfolios.
  • Instagram: Share your best photos and behind-the-scenes content.
  • TikTok: Create fun, engaging videos that show your personality and acting skills.
  • LinkedIn: Network with industry professionals.
