How to Get Started in Modeling and Acting: A Guide for Aspiring Talent

How to Get Started in Modeling and Acting: A  Guide for Aspiring Talent

Are you dreaming of seeing yourself on the big screen or gracing the covers of magazines? Modeling and acting are exciting industries filled with opportunities—but the key to success is preparation, professionalism, and having the right tools at your disposal.

One of the most important steps in launching your career is having high-quality headshots and a professional portfolio. I can't tell you how many aspiring actors or models have been passed over because their headshots do not show them off or meet the agency standards. If you truly want to make it, you should think of yourself as the CEO of your career. Be a professional and invest in your career.  As a previous talent manager and a top LA headshot photographer for over 12 years, I have seen clients who could not get in with an agency, until they had a strong portfolio and professional pictures. With years of experience as both a talent manager and a headshot photographer I can help you stand out in a very competitive industry. I can also guide you and recommend important steps to secure an agent once you have your new acting or modeling headshots.

Why Headshots and Portfolios Matter

Whether you’re a model or actor, your headshot is your first impression. Casting directors and agents review hundreds of submissions daily, so a professional headshot can make or break your chances. Your portfolio is equally critical—it shows your versatility, range, and potential. Casting or a talent agent may look at your portfolio of images and want to see how you move as a model, how you photograph in different poses, or they may want to see your body type. As an actor they will want to see your character range such as leading lady, girl next door, quirky, edgy etc. By having a strong portfolio of images, you are giving your agent the tools they need to pitch and or submit you to casting directors.

As a headshot photographer in LA who is recommended by top talent agencies, I focus on capturing your unique style and personality to ensure you get noticed. And if you are not sure what to wear, my assistant or I will advise you with wardrobe tips (with lots of photos and examples) whether you want to act or model.  We work with newbies to celebrities alike and will guide you no matter your experience level. We will also give you tips on hair & make up or you can hire my hair & make up artist who is one of the best in LA.

Actors and models need professional headshots to stand out.

Having the right wardrobe for your portfolio can make all the difference in your images.

Models will need looks that show their unique features and also their ability to pose in front of the camera.

Step 1: Decide Your Niche and Goals

Before stepping in front of the camera, it’s essential to know your niche. This helps you target the right wardrobe to build a portfolio that aligns with your career goals. It's also helpful in selecting agents to submit to. Often an agent will specialize in certain types so you want to hone in on your type and know how you might be best marketed. It is a business so this is part of being a professional and you taking charge of your career. What is your niche or what type of acting or modeling are you best suited for?

Modeling Niches

  • Fashion Modeling: Runway, high-fashion editorials, designer campaigns.
  • Commercial Modeling: Lifestyle ads for products and brands.
  • Fitness Modeling: Sportswear and fitness brands.
  • Plus-Size Modeling: Representing body positivity and inclusivity.

Acting Niches

  • Film and TV: Feature films, series, and streaming content.
  • Theater: Classical or contemporary live performances.
  • Voice Acting: Animation, video games, and commercials.
  • Commercial Acting: Short product advertisements.

Pro Tip: Do you have a great commercial look, a unique voice or a soothing voice? Are you tall with interesting bone structure and good for runway or are you more the athletic, fitness type of model. No matter your niche, your headshots and portfolios should reflect your target market. I offer numerous packages and headshot sessions that help you capture different looks for various roles—giving you a competitive edge. My assistant or myself will consult with you to help you determine the best package and the best looks to get an agent that aligns with your goals. Think about which products you would best represent and or which shows you might be a good fit for. You want your materials to align with your goals and what you are best fit for.

Know your market. What type of modeling is your goal? Are you very limber or athletic?

Are you comfortable to model lingerie or swimsuits?

Could you be a hand model, or do you have the lips for cosmetic brands?

Are you a Zara type model or an Abercrombie girl?

Both actors and models need a strong headshot. Your headshot should communicate from the eyes in a close up shot.

Your hair & make up should compliment your skin, eyes, hair, and bring attention to your features such as amazing curls, creamy, clear skin or stunning eyes.

Step 2: Build Your Portfolio and Resume

Your portfolio and resume are your most powerful marketing tools. Models need a variety of high-quality shots that showcase their range and ability to embody different styles. Actors need polished headshots and a demo reel that demonstrates their acting chops. We are always happy to make recommendations for creating a reel at no charge or hiring a top professional.

What Makes a Great Headshot?

  • Natural Lighting & Professional Setup: Avoid selfies or amateur photos.
  • Simple Backgrounds: Keep the focus on your face.
  • A Genuine Expression: A warm, engaging smile or a confident, serious look, soulful eyes, and always showing a variety of expressions for both actors and models.
  • Multiple Looks: For actors, have both commercial and theatrical headshots, as well as some personality or character looks. For models, include lifestyle, editorial, and beauty shots along with digitals.

Robin Lorraine Photography offers headshot packages tailored to your goals. We’ll guide you through posing, wardrobe selection, and expressions to ensure your photos highlight your best features and provide agencies with what is needed. Whether you are an actor or a model, we know what agencies need and want with prospective talent. We help you to prepare.

Actors will need commercial, theatrical and personality or character headshots. Consider what type of roles you might be good for...preppy, mean girl, young detective, sporty, edgy, comedic, professional such as lawyer, young intern etc. Your headshot portfolio should reflect this.

Your main headshot should show your look and features clearly. A confident, soulful look or a wonderful smize makes for a strong headshot for both actors and models. You can practice the look prior to the shoot.

Acting and modeling agencies need all types.

If you are an actor that is good with comedy or character types, ensure to have a headshot that reflects this. The wardrobe should also show the character.

Step 3: Find Representation

Once your portfolio and headshots are ready, it’s time to seek representation. A good talent agent connects you with the right opportunities and negotiates on your behalf.

How to Find an Agent:

1. Research top talent agencies in your niche or let me guide you with this.

2. Submit your headshots and portfolios.

3. Be cautious of scams—legitimate agents never ask for money upfront. They are commission based.

I can provide you with agent info and how to get set up on the casting sites prior to getting an agent so you can begin submitting yourself for jobs. I can help ensure your acting or modeling headshots and submission materials are polished and professional—giving you the best chance of catching an agent’s eye.

A big, natural smile in your headshot will capture casting and agents attention for both actors and models.

Step 4: Get Training and Experience

Experience and training will give you the skills and confidence you need to stand out. Ongoing training is extremely valuable for actors, but models can also learn by practicing poses, working with photographers TFP (trade for print) and even taking a commercial class. This gives you practice which builds confidence.

For Aspiring Actors

  • Take acting classes at local studios or online. We can recommend the best acting classes in LA.
  • Join community theater for stage experience.
  • Study different techniques including on camera, audition technique, cold reading or Improv.
  • Once you are set up with your photos and casting sites, you can self submit for roles to gain experience and even make some money. This is a perfect way to get your career going even prior to having an agent.

For Aspiring Models

  • Practice posing in front of a mirror or with a professional photographer.
  • Stay up-to-date on current fashion trends and learn about body angles.
  • Get yourself on legitimate casting sites that you can self submit for possible work. We can recommend.

Bonus Tip: During your Robin Lorraine Photography session, we’ll help you with posing techniques to create a variety of images that showcase your talent. Consider this a mini training session for the camera! My clients typically leave the session feeling very confident. As well, I can recommend the best local acting classes, casting director workshops and coaches and how to get set up on the casting sites so you can begin self-submitting for roles and work.

Athletic types or dancers should have some images and headshots that show off their skills and talent.
This type of shot can book a job directly from the photo for both actors and models.

Step 5: Market Yourself Online

In today’s digital world, a strong online presence is essential. Social media can be your best friend if used strategically and many agents will want you to have an account. In addition to social media, there are several casting sites that you should post your profiles on.

  • Casting Sites: Create your profiles with your resume, skills and headshots and portfolios.
  • Instagram: Share your best photos and behind-the-scenes content.
  • TikTok: Create fun, engaging videos that show your personality and acting skills.
  • LinkedIn: Network with industry professionals.

We will advise you on which casting sites are legitimate and make recommendations regarding this. Make sure your headshots are consistent across all platforms.

Some actors have images that show a bit of edge or different character types.
