MODELING FAQ - Height

Do I have to be tall to model? No, you don’t have to be tall to be a model! While height is important for traditional runway and high-fashion modeling (where agencies often look for women around 5'8"+ and men around 5'11"+), there are many other types of modeling that don’t have strict height requirements.

Height isn't always a factor in a modeling casting call. Maybe they are only showing the hands and face to sell a lipstick. Unique features are always helpful in the modeling world. Anything that can be sold from  jewelry to hair products, to autos, to gyms will need a model for their advertising. There are high end brands such as Chanel, and then more approachable brands such as Kohl's and JC Penney. And within those stores there can be a multitude of products that need different types of models.

Think about which type of modeling you might be very fit for, hand modeling, clothing, editorial, runway, fitness?

Models come in all shapes and sizes and all different heights. Taller models can typically do runway, but in this day and age, diversity has become all the rage, so agencies want to have a wide range of looks on their roster.

Fitness modeling has become quite popular with the emphasis on health and wellness.


If you are not tall, there are other areas you might work in. Here are some options:

  • Commercial modeling (advertisements, catalogs, brands) welcomes all heights.
  • Petite modeling is for shorter models, often under 5’7”.
  • Parts modeling (hands, feet, etc.) focuses on specific features rather than height.
  • Fitness modeling emphasizes physique over height.
  • Plus-size modeling has no height restrictions, though agencies may have preferences.
  • Alternative modeling (tattoos, unique looks, edgy styles) prioritizes individuality over height.
